Overall appearance and primary menu visibility depend on device screen size and orientation.
This help supports pinch-zoom. Your current font-size is .

Action Bar visible (eg: 'smartphone'):
Long press icon for description.
Tap icon for selection.
To see the overflow menu press hardware menu key (older devices) or the menu icon (3 vertical dashes/dots).

Action Bar absent (eg: 'tablet'):
The primary menu is permanently displayed alongside the main panel.

Settings (Menu item.) Use to define your application preferences.

Mute button suppresses spoken directions and other sounds. Effective when 'Speak' chosen from settings or automatic route point recording with 'beep' option.
NB: Set volume using hardware controls...
     (a) Speech: Use 'Media' Channel
     (b) Beep: Use 'Notifications' Channel

Use the or indicators as shortcuts to the android Settings > Location services at any time. (Suppress any further warning before the shortcut is fired via settings: Confirm Settings calls.)

Toggles the 2 primary operation modes:

Offline mode
Toggle to this mode whenever you do not need to use your GPS hardware. This disables all application interaction with the GPS hardware.
If the actual GPS hardware itself remains enabled the icon reminds you that potentially unecessary power consumption is occurring.
Offline mode with the icon showing is the normal mode of operation when you are not in the field.

GPS mode
Enables navigation and saving of the current geographic location as a waypoint (or as a routepoint - see Manual Route Recording at bottom of this page).
Signal strength from GPS satellite is dependant on topography, indoors/outdoors, etc.
To reduce battery consumption, make it a habit to toggle out of GPS mode at the earliest moment.
When you switch to this mode the 1st line indicates the current status of the your GPS hardware...

GPS mode - GPS status: Disabled []
You may receive a warning message if the GPS hardware on your android device is disabled. (If you choose to suppress this warning via settings: Hide GPS disabled warnings) you will instead be taken to the android Settings > Location services menu.

GPS mode - GPS status: Started []
Meaning: "Hardware activated, hardware waiting for location fix.
During 'warm-up' other status values may momentarily appear:-
Enabled, Waiting Meaning: "Hardware enabled, waiting for the activation event"
Connected!!! Meaning: "First location fix received from hardware, provider identified"
Resumed, waiting (n) Meaning: "Resumed after user-initiated interruption". ('n' counts the number of times GPS hardware STOP has occurred.)

GPS mode - GPS status: Receiving(Sats=x/y) []
This is the normal status visible during geo-tagging and navigation. It also notes the number of satellites used for the last location fix out of a recently observed maximum.
The button will be highlighted to indicate receipt of the first fix [ie: the Origin section will show the current co-ordinates and altitude] and a battery icon is shown to remind you that battery consumption is at maximum. You may now start saving new waypoints ('geo-tagging')...
Before pressing please ensure the following is understood....
You will be prompted to enter a name and optional description for the new waypoint. Characters before the first space, if any, are taken to be the name. Anything after is taken to be the description. (Edit the waypoint at a later time if you want to have spaces in the name.)
The information stored for the new waypoint is as follows:

Tip: Long press to view the last saved waypoint. This is commonly used for the purposes of editing id0 and id1 so that the point appears in the desired list!

Origin block in GPS mode
Shows the WGS84 co-ordinates of your current geophysical position and the raw altitude ('elevation') as returned by the GPS hardware. Elevation is adjusted via the EGM96 data set before it is saved in a new waypoint. (For example, a test conducted at sea-level, Warkworth, New Zealand showed a raw elevation of 33.269m. An adjustment of 35.285m was applied when the location was geo-tagged to give a resultant elevation of -2.016m.)
Tip: The most recently computed adjustment ('Geoid') is saved as an information only setting.
Use to project a new waypoint relative to your current position. [Contrast with ]

Origin block in Offline mode
Shows data from a previously selected point. (e.g. After pressing when viewing a waypoint.) Choosing origin/destination points in Offline mode is mostly a convenience method of obtaining the distance and bearing between two points.
Tap to view/edit the current origin. [eg - to clone or manually relocate it, manually project a new waypoint or update it with the last saved GPS location.]
Tap to forget the current origin.

Destination block
Shows computed distance and bearing from the current Origin to a previously selected destination []. (e.g. By pressing when viewing a waypoint.) When sketching a map in GPS mode this location will be so marked (assuming it lies within bounds).
Tap to view/edit the current destination.
Name is the waypoint name OR the point name ( in [ ] ) preceded by the owning shape name. Horizontally scrollable.
Snippet is the point description or comment as determined by settings. Horizontally scrollable.
Distance is in units determined by settings.
True bearing is with respect to true North (i.e. as shown on a paper map). It is never spoken aloud.
Magnetic bearing is true bearing adjusted for local magnetic declination. It determines how you point your compass when 'in the field'. It can be spoken!
NB: Local magnetic declination (sometimes called magnetic deviation) is periodically saved (for verification) as an 'information only' setting.
Tap to forget the current destination.

Other buttons & icons
To use 16-point magnetic compass hold device flat and rotate until displayed bearing matches magnetic bearing. [Then top and sides of device point to destination.]
The idiot pointer is just a modified compass that points to a magnetic bearing. [i.e. gives line of sight to the destination.]
Tap to list your previously saved waypoints.
Long press to directly view/edit the last saved waypoint.
Tap to list your previously saved shapes.
Long press to directly view/edit the last saved shape (ie: route or track).
Tap to list your previously saved maps.
Long press to directly sketch the last viewed map.

Manual Route Recording
This application supports routes of two varieties:
    (i) Route points ordered by sequence number
(ii) Route points ordered by timestamp
For case (ii), new routepoints can be saved as follows:
(1) Select a route (or use '+' to create a new one) from the 'Route list' screen and view its details.
(2) Press the REC button
(3) [At this point more context-sensitive help is available]
Define the parameters; viz:
    Manual recording with/without name/description prompting
Automatic recording by time or distance with/without audible beep
(4) Select 'Handheld GPS' mode from the Main Screen. (In manual mode you should see the 'Save route point' button. In automatic mode you see the selection criteria instead. You will always see the route recording status line near bottom of screen).
(5) Wait for 'Origin' block to show current position.
(6a) [Manual] Every time you press 'Save route point' a new time-stamped routepoint is added to the route and the count in the status line is incremented. [Depending on (3) above, you may be prompted for descriptive data.]
(6b) [Automatic] An anonymous time-stamped routepoint is added to the route every so many seconds or meters and the count in the status line is incremented. [Depending on (3) above, the event will be marked with an audible beep.]
(7) You may toggle between 'Offline' and 'Handheld GPS' modes during routepoint recording to conserve battery.
(8) When in 'Handheld GPS' mode, short press the status line to pause/resume recording for the current route. [Do this when you want to record waypoints in the middle of a route recording session!]
(9) When in 'Handheld GPS' mode, long press the status line to terminate point recording for the current route.
(10) Repeat above steps to later add more route points.
